St Ives

I spent last week chilling out in St Ives with the Boy – it was so nice to just get away and unwind. We stayed in Carbis Bay at a self catering villa from Carbis Bay Holidays. The split level villa was lovely – all modern conveniences, plus a hot tub! Unfortunately the Wi-Fi didn’t work all week - fine for me as I wanted to switch off from the world but not so great for the Boy who was aiming to do some work while we were there. The only other down side was the cleaner who turned up at 10.03am on our last day (check out was 10.00am) and proceeded to pretty much throw us out while warning we might be charged for the ’delay’… not the best lasting impression seeing as we were only 6 mins late! Otherwise though, I would definitely recommend staying here if you are in the area as the place itself was lovely. This was the view from our balcony -

carbis bay

Most days we got the little train from Carbis Bay to St Ives which takes 5 minutes and costs £1! St Ives is a lovely seaside town – not commercial like Newquay. Lots of boutique, independent shops and 3 beaches in one town!

We also went to Padstow and Penzance for a couple of little days out. As you can see we were quite lucky with the weather although the last few days were a bit rainy – come ON summer, you can do this!! All in all though a lovely week with some much needed chilling out.

Hope you all had a great week

Clare x

    DGJ Organics Hairjuice

A lot of haircare brands make some pretty strong claims, yet when I inevitably give in to the hype and purchase them, they make me feel a bit… meh. Ok, so the brands have made their money so they probably don’t mind but I really wanted to find a shampoo and conditioner that really did make my hair feel and look amazing as I do have it highlighted regularly which leads to it being a bit dry. Step up Daniel Galvin Junior Organics and their new range of organic haircare - ’Hairjuice’.*

    Daniel Galvin Junior Hairjuice Shampoo

The Clarifying shampoo smells AMAZING. It smells of oranges (I’m guessing that’s the mandarin essential oils) and contains certified organic ingredients - I love the fact it’s natural haircare. The shampoo lathered up beautifully and although my hair doesn’t tend to get very greasy it really felt fresh and squeaky clean.

    Daniel Galvin Junior Hairjuice Conditioner

The Clarifying conditioner also smells fab and has an almost foamy texture rather than the creaminess you expect from a conditioner. I leave this on for about 5 minutes to really let it penetrate to the roots of my hair before rinsing it off. Also containing organic mandarin and rose extracts it really makes my hair feel smooth and sleek on top of fresh and clean - even more so when I brave the curl and let my hair dry naturally. For only £5.99 each it’s excellent value – check out the range on the DGJ Organics website here.

      A few new shoes…

So I was in London last weekend having me a little retail therapy and picked up these two beauties. First up is this gorgeous pair of flats from Zara.

      Zara Sparkly flats

What’s not to love? Sooo comfy and perfect for the upcoming summer months (HA). Silver, sparkly and glitterful, Zara Basic has come up trumps here with these, retailing at £39.99 and available now in store in silver and black. I also picked up these nude studded pumps from Kurt Geiger Carvela….

      KG Carvela pumps

…. perfect for the office and super comfy. I love the bow detailing and the colour goes with pretty much everything. They were in the sale, £29.00 reduced from £89.00 so a bit of a bargain. It would have been rude not to.

        Ted Baker Ipad Case

I have been meaning to buy an Ipad case since I got my Ipad. Which was about 3 months ago. After several trips to London with it shoved in my bag and several near misses where I have nearly inadvertantly dropped it (heart stopping panic) I figured I had probably better get my arse in gear and pick one up before I did something that would cost me a lot to repair. So, I picked up this little beauty from Ted Baker.

        Ted Baker Ipad Case

I love their plastics range – I bought a white bag with a little black bow on it when it first came out. Its exactly the perfect size (some Ipad cases come up quite large?) and has a beautiful butterfly lining inside. It was the perfect buy. I bought mine for £29.99 from a retail outlet at Gun Wharf Quays so I cant link to a site, but I would definitely recommend hunting one down if you are looking for a cute and practical case.

          Hotel Du Vin, Poole

I have always liked the Hotel Du Vin chain. Firstly, its all about the wine. Secondly, I like the fact each hotel and restaurant maintains a boutique, cosy feel alongside first rate customer service. I have visited the Winchester one several times and when looking for a location for my 30th birthday dinner with the girls a couple of months ago, the Poole Hotel Du Vin hotel and restaurant seemed a good choice. It is located a couple of minutes walk off Poole Quay in a beautiful Georgian building with 38 rooms, a bistro, bar and wine cellar. There is also a pretty outside courtyard area where they serve wonderful cream teas.

          Hotel Du Vin, Poole

Myself and GH booked a room to make the most of the experience (there’s no way we were driving home after seeing that cocktail list) and headed out to wander around the picturesque Poole Quay before the other girls joined us in the room for some pre dinner champagne.

          Poole Quay

The room itself was spacious with VERY comfy beds complete with Egyptian linen and all the little luxuries that make a stay extra special, including a Nespresso coffee machine, huge fluffy dressing gowns and an enormous roll top bath alongside a large separate drench shower. The decor isn’t the most modern, more ‘rustic boutique’ with dark stained floor boards and soft lighting – it is also spotlessly clean (I’m a total fiend for inspecting rooms – Four In A Bed has nothing on me).

          Hotel Du Vin, Poole

          Hotel Du Vin, Poole

          Hotel Du Vin, Poole

Unfortunately, I was a bit crap from this point onwards and fuelled by champagne and a couple of heavenly cocktails from their comprehensive list, I threw myself into the evening and completely forgot to take any pictures of the food. Dinner was however, beautifully presented and cooked from their A La Carte menu. Special mention must be given to the extra dessert brought by DL – SparklySexyCool cupcakes! (no she didn’t make them herself!). J’ADORE!

          SSC Cupcakes

Here’s DD and GH modelling them and generally looking glam….

          DD and GH

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend the Hotel Du Vin chain and especially the Poole hotel, if you are in the area. It isn’t the cheapest option in the area but the service and decor are fantastic and they really went to extra mile to make my birthday stay special.

The Eye Make Up Remover of Champions

I spend a lot of time perusing other beauty blogs and often see very expensive eye make up removers featured. Well you all know I am a sucker for some fancy packaging BUT only IF the product inside also matches up to the hype. Well sometimes, cheap can also mean excellent and this is the case for my eye make up remover of choice from the Boots Essentials Cucumber range.

Boots Cucumber Eye Make Up Remover Gel

Retailing at an astonishing £1.50, I apply with a cotton wool pad and it is fantastic at removing even the most stubborn waterproof eye make up as well as being gentle and soothing with extract of cucumber. It also lasts for ages! If you are looking for a bargain would definitely recommend giving it a try – I have sampled all sorts of high end brands’ eye make up removers and for me this always comes up trumps.

Available at all Boots stores or online here.

Max Factor Max Effect Mini Nail Polish

It’s been a little while since I did a nail polish post – or in fact many posts at all. ‘Real Life’ caught up a but over the last month or so and I have neglected my beauty rating and slating duties a little bit. Apologies, readers!

However – I am back with this little beauty from Max Factor. Little indeed, or mini even as this nail polish is part of their range of smaller nail polishes. Whether this is a clever marketing con to make less product and charge an average amount for it maybe, but I really picked it up for the colour alone.

              Max Factor Max Effect

I love dark nail colours and although perhaps more geared towards A/W than Spring, this deep navy blue with a slight shimmer was unlike anything else I have in my collection. The colour has lasted a good 2 days so far with no chips which is pretty good as well.

You can buy Max Factor from most Boots/Superdrug stores.

                purminerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup

I’m loving mineral make up more and more, especially as I (cough) get a tinsy bit older. I find as a rule it provides better coverage and is a more natural option. Which is why when I was sent this Pur Minerals 4-in-1 pressed mineral make up, I was all over it.

                purminerals 4-in-1 pressed mineral makeup

I haven’t actually heard of the brand before, but they contain no harsh chemical dyes, petroleum-based oils, fragrance or fillers. Always a plus. It also contains an break through ingredient of Ceretin Complex which is makeup’s first proven anti aging technology – also, always a plus! The product itself feels heavy and expensive, with a compact mirror inside. I used shade light/clair which was actually a pretty good match for my skin tone. The coverage was really good – a definite rival to my go-to powder from Bobbi Brown at first. It came with a beautifully soft brush, also from Pur Minerals which although great quality I felt wasn’t quite big enough for full face coverage so I used my normal larger powder brush.

The pressed powder I tried retails for £24 – a slightly higher price tag than I expected, but then if it rivals Bobbi Brown I suppose that’s about average! You can’t buy the brush separately (I don’t think) but it does come as part of their 5 piece Start Now kit. Pur Minerals is available exclusively from Marks and Spencers Your Beauty if you have one near you, or you can buy online from their website here.

UPDATE – OK so at first I really liked this powder – it went on really nicely and the coverage indeed was great. However, after a day at the office the comparison with Bobbi Brown began to falter. It began to go a bit cakey and further applications looked a bit patchy. I think for powder on a night out it would do nicely but not for providing all day coverage for a busy girl on the go!

                  Philosophy Body Washes

Ok, so it may be a little bit after Christmas now, but I bought these gorgeous Philosophy goodies in New York and have only just got round to unwrapping them. They are, quite frankly, pretty lush.

                  Philosophy treats

I bought these as part of a gift set which also came with lip glosses, all from the amazing Sephora. I love Philosophy products, mainly because of their sheer indulgent smells – I really wish this blog was scratch and sniff! In the set was ‘Have a Cherry Christmas’ which was an intense cherry flavour (I ADORE cherry products), ‘Sparkling Cranberry’ which again was a really fruity smell and ‘Peppermint Bark’ which has a really refreshing mint smell. Finally in the set was ‘Cinnamon Buns’, which is so sweet it makes you want to lick it – and comes complete with a recipe on the bottle of how to make the genuine article! The prodicts triple up as shampoo, bubble bath and shower gel although I only used them as the latter.

                  Philosophy treats

If you have a store near you in the UK that stocks Philosophy (John Lewis, for example) I woud definitely recommend you give some of their products a try. They really are lovely with innovative, unique packaging and make fab presents.

                    Dolce and Gabbana The One

It’s been a little while since I did a fragrance post – obviously given the cost I tend not to be investing in a new scent on a weekly basis! However I have been hovering my nose over this one for a while and given the gift set was reduced in the Boots sale, it would really have been rude not to pick it up.

                    Dolce and Gabbana 'The One'

The  set came with a perfumed body lotion which is always a nice freebie. The scent itself features top notes of mandarin and peach that leads into a heart of jasmine and ends with a base of vanilla, amber and musk. To me, it smells like the kind of perfume you wear out for cocktails or a for a date – it’s definitely an ‘evening’ scent.

                    Dolce and Gabbana 'The One'

I bought mine for a reduced rate of £25.33 for the set, but if it’s too late to grab this bargain now some of the cheapest prices I could find for it online are from Escentual here.

                      Chanel Illusion D’Ombre

I was lucky enough to receive this absolutely BEAUTIFUL Chanel Illusion D’Ombre eye shadow for Christmas – how lucky am I? I have lusted after it for a little while and it truly is one of the most lovely eyeshadows I have ever used. Even the little glass pot and applicator are perfectly designed (I’m such a sucker for sumptious packaging!) – the applicator means you can apply it as an eye shadow or at a right angle as an intense gold eye liner.

                      Chanel Illusion D'Ombre

The shade I have is ’89 -Vision’ which is a deep metallic gold shade. I tried to swatch it but to be honest I just couldnt get the light right to convey the irridescent effect of this shade – it’s almost more tiny, tiny, flecks of gold rather than full coverage like a regular eyeshadow. The texture is so silky smooth – it simply glides on and lasts for HOURS. I absolutely love it – if you are looking for the perfect gold eye shadow then look no further.

You can buy the Chanel Illusion D’Ombre from selected Boots stores for £23.00 or online.

Nails Inc Mirror Metallic Nail Polish – Cheyne Walk

Morning my sparkly friends! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and got all the fabulous gifts you were hoping for, as well as most importantly spending time with your nearest and dearest (that is what the festive period is all about of course!).

For Christmas this year I went for this beautiful Nails Inc Mirror Metallic Nail Polish – Cheyne Walk is the shade.

                        Nails Inc Metallic Polish

Although it wasn’t a traditionally festive green, red or gold I loved the metallic effect. To make it extra shiny and really catch the light I didn’t add a top coat – perhaps because of this it did chip a little bit on the second day of wearing. Still, a lovely unique shade.

                          SparklySexyCool does New York!

As regular visitors to this little slice of the internet will know, I was lucky enough the be taken by The Boy to New York for (whisper it) my 30th birthday. What a lucky girl I am! It truly is a completely fabulous city for places to explore, interesting stuff to do, things to eat and drink and to experience it at Christmas when all the Xmas decorations really topped it all off. We were there from Thursday afternoon to Sunday night – a perfect amount of time. We were also so lucky with the weather as we had crystal clear blue skies the first two days and just a little bit of rain on the last afternoon.

I visited the fabulous Sephora as well as Bath and Body Works and a few other beauty related stores, but I thought it would be nice to do a post first that just showed some of the beautiful sights we saw. We stayed at the wonderful Hotel Chambers, on 56th Street just off 5th Ave – a perfect location for all the high end shopping boutiques. We stayed in a double room which was plenty big enough to accomodate lots of shopping bags, plus a huge bathroom. Service was great – we didn’t eat at the hotel but they do have a Japanese style restaurant.

                          Hotel Chambers

I loved this view on the way to the hotel from JFK – the unmistakeable site of skyscrapers and yellow cabs.

                          New York Taxis

One of the first things we did was to head down to the Rockefeller Centre to see the famous Christmas Tree….

                          Rockefeller Tree

                          and the ice rink below…

                          Rockefeller Ice Rink

Before just wandering around gazing at some of the beautiful Christmas decorations on the shops in 5th Ave. There really were so many BEAUTIFUL designs that I could fill this post up just with them, but these were some that caught my eye!

                          Xmas Lights NYC

Obviously I did rather a lot of shopping and The Boy was MOST patient (he is stocking up some major brownie points, don’t you think?). I didn’t buy anything from Tiffanys but I had to visit the store – they had the most lovely window displays and an amazing view down 5th Ave from the second floor.

                          Tiffanys 5th Ave

We also went to Central Park although we didn’t do the whole thing (would have taken far too much time). We decided not to do the horse and carriage and just walk around so we could see everything at our own pace. We also found a beautiful place in the middle by this lake (below) to have a hot chocolate by a roaring fire amid beautiful Christmas decorations.

                          Central Park

All this walking was fuelled by one of these every morning – I absolutely LOVE American breakfasts and I pretty much stuffed my face everyday. This little bad boy included pancakes with bananas and strawberries, coffee and a side of sausage (basically like a Sausage McMuffin). Literally amazing.

                          A Lot Of Food

We jumped in a cab and went to see Ground Zero – I really wanted to go just to see what it was like. It’s so shocking to see the height of the buildings that survived and realise how tall the Twin Towers stood – and what a huge loss of life occured on that day. It’s hard now to imagine the devastation – the Towers were in the gap of blue sky in the picture below.

                          Ground Zero

We also walked down Wall Street and looked out towards the Brookyn bridge before walking down the the Staten Island ferry. We did see the Statue of Liberty although it looked pretty small and far away. At least we saw it – we were going to take the ferry but decided it would take too much time out of the day.

Finally, although we saw so many beautiful window displays from Macys, Saks and the many other high end store dotted across New York, Bergdorf Goodman created some absolutely exquisite designs – I just had to show you this, one of many displays that were just utterly sumptious.

                          Bergdorf Goodman window display

So there were some highlights of my trip… I have probably left out loads, like the amazing meal for my birthday at Abe and Arthurs in the Meatpacking district alongside some ridiculously good cocktails (I literally fell into a cab back to the hotel!), seeing Times Square at night for the first time and wondering at the sheer scale of the skyscrapers. It was a fabulous birthday treat and I cannot wait to go back. I definitely love, love, LOVE, New York.

                            Court House Clinics

So, on Tuesday I was minging. No, I was. I was tired, jet lagged and grumpy. So, when the lovely girls at Flipside PR suggested a relaxing treatment at Court House Clinics it really couldn’t have been better timed.

Court House Clinics are a medical doctor led clinic group and offer both surgical and non surgical led treatments -  after first opening in 1998 they now have 10 branches in the UK – I visited the Bournemouth clinic.

                            Court House Clinics, Bournemouth

After filling in some forms along with a warm welcome, a skin analysis was done in a machine you basically stick your face in (kind of like the ones that tell you if you have sun damage) and it was determined I have some dry areas of skin (probably dehydration from my recent flight). An Omnilux Light treatment was prescribed – or ‘Omnilux revive LED – photon absorption therapy’ to give it its full name! It is a totally natural method of light therapy that uses a combination of pure, visible red and infra red light to re juvenate the skin by stimulating skin tissue to soften lines and aid tissue oxygenation and detoxification. After cleansing the red light was shone directly on my face for around 30 mins (I think, it was so relaxing I nearly fell asleep). At first it was very bright but after a few minutes it was actually rather soothing and I was of course given mini goggles to protect my eyes. I was also given a lovely hand massage at which point I probably started snoring!

                             Coffeeberry Treatments

After the light therapy, a Priori Coffeeberry Natureceutical skin peel was applied to achieve optimum results from the light treatment. I have always liked the thought of skin peels and I LOVE exfoliating, but the thought of a chemical peel scares me! This is the perfect alternative – using Coffeeberry which is one of nature’s most potent botanicals and three times more powerful than green tea as an antioxident. Coffeeberry is rumoured to deliver powerful anti aging benefits and I could wait to give it a try! The peel was applied and left for 10 mins to work its magic before being cleansed off and a Coffeeberry treatment applied. I felt a slight tingling during the treatment but this soon passed after a couple of minutes.

I was suprised at how, well, good my skin looked after both treatments. It just looked less dry and more supple as well as feeling SO smooth. I forced myself off the treatment couch and back into the cold Bournemouth night - when I got home The Boy even noticed how nice my skin looked. It’s now two days on and I’m still really pleased with the results - my skin feels smooth and The Wrinkle even looks slightly reduced. I would absolutely recommend both these treatments to anyone that needs a skin pick me up or just a pampering session. The girls at Court House Clinic in Bournemouth were also so friendly and professional.

I did pick up some info about botox… but that decision is one for another day. Right now I’m enjoying the results and I would definitely return. Find out more info about either treatment or locate your nearest Court House Clinic here.

                              Victoria’s Secret Make Up Bag

Happy Birthday to me! Well, it was last Friday but as I was in New York for the weekend I have been a bit quiet on the blogging front. I had a fab time and will do a longer post all about the city and the amazing shopping there – there are some real fashion and beauty bargains to be had including a pair of Ugg boots I bought (the ankle ones with the little button). These were £150 in the UK but $135 over there which is about £83 – a saving of about £67!

One of the other smaller items I bought was from Victoria’s Secret – this gorgeous glittery make up bag will replace my rather battered Cath Kidston one.

                              Victoria's Secret make up bag

Although I do like their underwear I have to admit I actually prefer their sleepwear, make up accessories and body sprays. I loved this make up bag – its big enough to squeeze all the essentials in but small enough to fit into my bag. Being shiny on the outside as well means it’s lee likely to get damaged. It was around $12.00.
